Hey Willie! I'm feeling the same way, as far as being a little uninspired. I've found that if I don't put as much pressure on myself to be creative, and focus on other things that are fun for me, like taking photographs, or cooking, I become motivated again. So mini-breaks and trying different things are a good way to stay inspired.
I totally agree with the previous poster! (Well said Mija!) I've been a little unmotivated myself lately. I just try to remember that: often inspiration will come from the most random of things. Sometimes even grocery shopping can be inspiring. All of those organic shapes and aisles of happy packaging. You can find some pretty wild stuff. Just keep your eyes peeled and have an open/explorative mind. Or better yet, just go and get creative in the kitchen. For me, sometimes being creative outside of the drawing realm actually helps me get my groove back. Haha! Who knew? (Hope this helps!)
Dancing, cooking or planning a 5 course meal, a trip to the petting zoo, toys R us or the Apple store where I like to tune all the iPods and sound systems to the same song at top volume. Sitting at the Grayhound station and making up people's stories, or watching Springer (followed by Opra). A trip to the asian supermarket or my local indian supermarket for a fresh made Mango smoothie...
work with some duct tape willie try and make something 3d. works like a charm for me. or perhaps get a nice bowl of chocolate pudding and put it on a cookie sheet and finger paint. or wonderbread, no crusts - molded into little animals. after that your pen and sketchpad will look SOOoooooo inviting. xo s
...in ten steps: 1)open refrigerator 2)close refrigerator 3)lean on sink 4)curse & mutter to self 5)wonder why the mail isn't here yet. 6)swallow 7)blink 8)find a pen 9)curse & mutter some more 10)spill
Take a look at what all people have done (to see if I could copy something) the shake shake shake my head (to mix all the ideas) then sit and eat something.... Sometimes it works....
Maybe it's a winter thing, because I can't seem to get moving either. I've been bending paperclips at my desk for the last week to see what kind of shapes can emerge and that's about as creative as I've been for the last few months. Maybe you need a box of paperclips and a desk job?
Drop a cat from a great height. Lands upright - you'll know all will (yes you) work out right. Lands wrong way - your laugh will fix things. BRAIN chemicals! *vomit*
Music, sweet music....listen to your faves, the ones that bring back the memories, the ones that make ya want to dance, the ones that make you want to make love.....music, sweet music.
Smash two cliches together and see what newtrons spawn.
Look at a callus. Write a poem about the callus.
Open a book on botany at random, and find a word. Roll it around in your mind like a big shiny hand-blown marble. Crawl into its vowels and see if there's an echo.
Your lack of inspiration is still inspired, even if it doesn't seem so to you. I find that taking a walk and just getting into being outside helps my mind get free... I just get into the groove of being outdoors in Nature, and ideas start coming into my head.
for me, artist's dates are great! I don't do them very often, but when I do, I feel inspired and connected and motivated. As a matter of fact, I'm going to go on one right now! Bye.
Go TP someone's house and then burn a tire in their yard...make sure you get caught...go to jail...then look at all of the prison artwork on the walls...think of how you could do it better...send in the theme 'bad prison artwork made good' to IF and you'll be loaded for bear...
A good movie can be motivation for me. It usually has to be about someone or something creative though, or the struggle for it. Cradle will Rock, Frida, Shakespeare in Love, Immortal Beloved... something along those lines. It gives you a couple of hours to just zone out and shut down your thinker, follow a story, and watch (even if it is a fictionalization) other people be inspired.
I like your post. I find that it is important that I take care of my inner self to remain creative. I also find time out in nature is highly theraputic for the soul, and the creative muse.
i have been uninspired as late too...i flip through photos, walk through the park, read a book, watch a movie, or usually i just sit and listen to music.
1. See a good movie. 2. Listen to good music. 3. Have a wonderful wine. 4. Go outside and look at people's faces. If you still don't get inspired, go to bed, sleep and wait for another day.

perfect solution to a common problem; squirt some paint on there; move it around; see what develops.

Grab a dictionary, open it randomly, and without looking jab your finger at a word. See what comes and go with it...

ReplyDeleteTry not to do anything creative for 24 hours...do something different, change the routine of your life for a day.
ReplyDeleteThen sleep...dreaming brings out all sorts of fabulous ideas and imagery into the mix.

ReplyDeleteEither take a break, or forget the meaning of the word and just keep on going.
