Illustration Friday - Camouflage

So I'm in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (I'm wearing camouflage shorts) and a small, mean woman who works there tells me I'm not allowed to use a pen in the museum. When she wasn't looking I finished the drawing (which is below, of a Picasso and a Matisse on top of each other), then I went outside where I drew the top sketch, and put devil horns on her head. I felt better immediately. ;-)

  1. I really hate when they do things like that at SF MOMA. what good is an art museum if it forces artists to put away their pens?

really cool drawings, I enjoyed them :D

  2. I think the horns are perfect. Why won't they allow pens? That is so ridiculous. As if one will copy a Reubends with a $1.99 ball pen or draw a mustache on a Degas ballerina! It's an outrageuosly ridiculous rule.

  4. No pens!! That's crazy. Like the drawings though - particularly the picasso and matisse on top of each other.

I always draw cartoons of people who annoy me, too - a small revenge, but effective as a release

  10. hehe, i really like both of these drawings a lot. why is it that people who work in major art galleries are quite nasty? i have encounted one myself, almost physically handling me "this is a paid exhibition!!!!!"
well tell me where to pay mr grumpy!
i really like how you've used mutiple colours, it really brings out a certain something i'm a big fan of!

  11. I like these two sketches! I guess people in the galleries just don't understand the impulse of drawing when surronded by such magnificent material.. they probably think your going to sketch on the paintings..:(

Not to add fuel to the fire, but many museums prohibit the use of pens around pieces of art. They will, however, allow pencils. The theory (as I've been told) is that if some kid slams in to you causing you to fall into the painting (or whatever) the ink is much more difficult to remove from the piece of art than graphite. But I believe that if they're going to ask you to put your pen away, they should offer you a pencil instead. Cute illo, btw.

  16. Ive heard stories of people going into museums in the wee hours of the mornings, with their easels and oil paints, to copy the masters. i couldnt imagine that nowadays. can you still bring liquids inside?

    fuck art, I say.
