Illustration Friday - Hats

Golf IS the most pointless game on earth.
And they all wear hats. (Even the little guy driving that cart).

"Golf appeals to the idiot in us and the child. Just how childlike golf players become is proven by their frequent inability to count past five." ~John Updike

"I have a tip that can take five strokes off anyone's golf game: it's called an eraser." ~Arnold Palmer

"Golf is a lot of walking, broken up by disappointment and bad arithmetic." ~Author Unknown

"It's easy to see golf not as a game at all but as some whey-faced, nineteenth-century Presbyterian minister's fever dream of exorcism achieved through ritual and self-mortification." ~Bruce McCall

"I guess there is nothing that will get your mind off everything like golf. I have never been depressed enough to take up the game, but they say you get so sore at yourself you forget to hate your enemies." ~Will Rogers

"Golf is a good walk spoiled." ~Mark Twain

"Golf balls are attracted to water as unerringly as the eye of a middle-aged man to a female bosom." ~Michael Green, The Art of Coarse Golf, 1967

  3. could not agree more! friends who play say it is great excercise to walk around, thank you, then I will just simply take a walk versus looking for a little ball! they say if they were not open green spaces then there would be another shopping mall. I say OR mre PUBLIC spaces that do not cost a MEMBERSHIP to walk through. and with all the chemicals they use to keep their lawns so pretty make those places much LESS than green!

I think Twain had it right.
Rather look at the real woods, thanks.

  5. Yes. I hate golf, too. And I am surrunded by golf courses, so it is hard to find anyone who agrees with me. I knew you were cool, Willie. :~)

I don't participate in golf.. but what's worse of a topic is the amount of natural landscapes that they ruin.

Apart from the hats and social aspect of it, i actually find it a good "brain-excercise".

*If i were to ever play it again..

    Good drawing though Willie

  11. Ha ha! These are all great quotes and a fine accompanying sketch. The Mark Twain one has always been a personal fave of mine, but I need to copy the Will Rodgers one, actually all of these. Thanks for the good laugh and have an excellent weekend.

  12. A zippy drawing. I've never played golf but if I did I'd wear a top hat just to be different.

  13. nowwwwww...being a past collegiate casual golfer, a true whiffer, the "i could use the pitching wedge on any hole i want" kind of player, i kind of disagree. kind of.

golf is what it is. chasing the beer cart. working on your calf muscles. um, wearing sweater vests. watching caddyshack and then pretending to be groundskeeper carl on the public 9 hole, waaaay after dark. it's the kind of fun you make when you make fun of it. or take it way too seriously.

oh and my sister, she's a pro. and she married a pro. and the have hats from EVERY COURSE THEY HAVE EVER PLAYED. and that's a llllot of hats. :))

    fun piece, willie! :)

  14. oh those are hysterical... i don't get it either- people walking for miles following a little white ball named "dammit" from place to place...

  18. Love the drawing. Also, there are 5 golf courses in my tiny new england town. Lot's of chances to drive by and JUST when they are getting ready to hit that ball...you can honk you horn! Great fun.

My take is that the more times you hit the ball, the more bang you are getting for the big bucks that you pay. Golfers just don't get it!

Does anyone else remember Ed Norton on the Honeymooners (reruns!) addressing the ball with "Helllloooo ball"?

  20. Please!

Send an email to the Brazil embassj in your country and report the injustice that the brazilian courts are making with this girl.

  23. Fitting that this post would be the one I return to...I pretty much feel the same way. Thanks so much for continuing to visit my ghost town of a blog. It was the highlight of my day to get a comment from you. :-)

The Will Rogers quote is hilarious but Mark Twain is the best!
Love the way you illustrated this :DD

  25. I don't play golf but I like watching the masters. It is a game of skill and the only sport other than Nascar where the players don't have bare tatoos, speak proper grammar even with different accents and the players are not most likely going to have felony or rape charges. However, you are always very clever and your illustrations are always very sharp.

  26. Oh so clever. I wish I lived in Scotland just to have an excuse to play and not work.

  27. Great quotes! (Love the Updike one.) And though the illustration really stre-e-e-tches the theme, it's still brilliant! (and what's more imporatnt, after all?)

  28. You always find an unique way to illustrate and make us smile, Willie :)

  30. I live in a golf mecca....Pebble Beach. I can see why some love the game...being out in nature, the zen of it. And then there are the obnoxious fanatics! Those are the ones to avoid. I've never played, but I can see why some truly love it. Great post and quotes Willie ;)

I like the dimples on the golf ball. For some reason they make me smile, maybe because I can tell you took the time to deliberately place them the way you did, yet they still have a "sprinkled" quality to them. ;)
